How can I prevent blade rusting?
I wipe off my blades and boots after each use. I use the big, puffy, fuzzy soakers after and store my skates with them.
But my blades have a serious rusting issue. Currently, my blades are rusted so badly, that I fear I will be unable to skate in them until I can remove it.
Will sharpening the blades remove the rust completely?
Are there any other methods to remove rust?
Also, what else can I do to prevent this from ever happening again?
*Not sure if this is a factor, but I have Wilson Excel blades..
How can they be this bad? You must wipe them down thoroughly. Take both skates off and stretch a little while you’re warmed up, the skates will warm up, and you can wipe more water off of them. Wipe the boot down, the blades including the part where they attach with the boots.
Will sharpening the blades remove the rust completely? On the very bottom, yes. But sharpening too much will wear them down too much. A little rust shouldn’t hurt, its just when it’s on the very bottom of the skate where it touches the ice, it affects the grip into the ice, and you could slide. Eventually you need new blades regardless, you should upgrade to accommodate your level.
Are there any other methods to remove rust? There are certain mixtures to remove rust but be careful what you put on your blades. It’s best to ask someone who knows figure skates very well, such as a pro shop owner.
Also, what else can I do to prevent this from ever happening again? Keep them super dry after skating, always put the soakers on, and don’t let them touch anything but the ice, because it could be dirt as well.
